SOI is quite retarded at emission clean engines, so there is less noise and harmful gasses produced, but it also causes worse efficiency. The best result in economy for PD engines is around 3-4 degrees more advanced according to stock setup, but I wouldn't know abouf CR engine - I am still trying. But it's hard to test consumption when there's always some idiot around trying to prove something with his BMW/audi/honda, and I've got to prove him wrong.
