Many thanks for that explanation.

The pedal box on the second link was not what I was aiming for... but the "DTUK® CRD-T MultiChannel Common Rail+Boost" device.

http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/box ... .php?id=10

This is described as:

Latest Multichannel Digital Technology

The Common Rail CRD-T MultiChannel Digital Plug and Play Diesel Tuning System from DTUK is available for a variety of Common Rail turbo diesel engines and improves power and torque by up to 40%. The CRD-T differs from our other systems by connecting into the turbo boost sensor as well as the fuelling system for additional control over the vehicles power delivery.

This system contains surface mounted electronics and an on board microprocessor which we load with vehicle specific software that has been tailored to your make and model of car.

Up to 50+bhp increase and better fuel economy is achievable with this system depending on your vehicle, and driving style

On the face of it, it seems a bit different from the first device you described, and goes on to suggest that there are 4 switchable custom maps, specific to the vehicle. The "how it works" page, also includes some sample dyno graphs: http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/how_it_works.php

The example quoted indicates a 40% power improvement:

Now, all this of course could be b*****t, but at first glance it appears reasonable. What do you think?

Regards,

Andy

Exactly the same junk.
It hijacks sensors and lies to the ECU about the sensor readings.
This one taps in to the MAP sensor too as well as the fuel rail.

Those sensors are there for a reason and they are calibrated to tell the truth for a reason :wtf:

Having said that their are plenty of tuners around that will take several hundred and just increase the duration and the boost and nothing more....exactly like this piece of crap.
;)

Just my personal opinion of course :silent:

Since the topic title is "Basics" and my doubts related to the subject i am making this post. I see files with different extensions like
ols, a2l, hex, dam, h79, ori etc does this point to different maps or is it like mmmmmm 4 eg; a big hex file with all the ecu files in it and we should search for the related maps in it?

There is no clear answer for that really...

*.OLS are WinOLS project files. Only WinOLS can view or edit these files. Do NOT flash this directly to your ECU.
*.DAM i THINK is a DAMOS file... which basically tells WinOLS where all your maps are within a hexdump. like a cheat file almost.

Actual ECU hex-dumps (or bins) as far as I know do not have a standard file extension and can be

ORI: Normally Original/Standard dumps
MOD: Normally Modified dumps
MAP/BIN/ROM/HEX/many more

Mine are normally saved as .MAP 'just because'

What you normally do is, download the bin from your ECU... then import into WinOLS. You can then use WinOLS to manually find your maps or if your lucky enough to have a Damos file that matches your ECU WinOLS will find all your maps automatically... But yes all maps are inside the ECU dump, not in individual files.

Ok. So you get your ORI, ideally find a .DAM, import it into WinOLS, and tune according to your hardware specs...?

Pretty much, yes :)

However, damos/A2l files are notoriously unreliable, unless you have EXACT version numbers they are relevant for. Many of the files you find online are also not readable at all.

Meaning, if the damos is for SW version 2004 but your software is version 2560, it will probably not help you at all, even if it's for the exact same car...

So beware :) Anyway, it's better to figure out yourself where and what the maps are - this way, you'll understand way more instead of just turning some dials and hoping for results.

I agree with Relic.

Seen plenty of these DTUK smoke boxes, people will always buy them though as they are completely DIY.

For the price a proper professional tune can be had.
