tdi ECU types

Hello, forum members
Sorry, if my question looks infantile. How did you find out what type of ECU is installed in the car? MSA12,MSA15, EDC15,EDC15V,EDC15P, EDC15+, EDC16....EDC17...etc? Some of them do have a note on the ECU's sticker ,for example - EDC15P. But what about others?

Hi, if you write the HW and SW numbers on Google, manytimes you can find the type of ecu...

I can not agree.... OK, let's put in the google MSA12 ECU SW number "0281001251 028906021P" and you will see no sufficient result. If you will be searching in all references which Google gives to you, you may be find. But it costs too many time

Its just experience. If i know year and engine i can tell lot at least guess. Also ecus are different by shape.

So, please, tell me to which category we must classify following ECUs: 028906021 GL,038906018P, 038906018 DG. The first is MSA, I know(msa12 or msa15). But what about next two? They all three are from 1,9 TDI AFN engines. It's possible not all AFN ECUs I mentioned. Especially I fill confused in MSA. EDC15 also a lot of indexes which confusing me.

021GL are MSA15(internal map), both 018 are still MSA15(external map), but a bit newer. EDC15 brings you obd flash functionality.

021 ecus are edc15vm+ obd flash, launch control and so on.

There are also similar 021 ecus only in plastic case. They are MSA12(internal map), crap.

Thank you and sorry,I misunderstood something.
"EDC15 brings you obd flash functionality" does it means every single EDC15 ECU can be reflashed via obd? MSA can't? What about EDC16, EDC17? And EDC15 have too many indexes:M, M-5X, P , P+, P-6, VM, V (and it is vw group only)
How you don't miss in this category?
