Need Help - Ecu Transistor Replacement

Postby voidzzz » Tue Jan 20, 2015 3:24 pm

Hi all,

This is my first post and i hope i won't get flame for it

Short story:
I'm on progress of swapping toyota 1uzfe engine into FJ40.
It's basically done with a few minor glitches. Engine run ok with factory ecu, only minor error code flashes.
One of the glitches is fuel pump controller.
FC/FPR from ecu couldn't trip the fuel pump relay. While i can get away with it by getting trigger from ignition (always on fuel-pump mode), it will be better if i can make the ecu do it's job.
So i decided to open the ecu and trace the problematic pin backward.
Found out that the transistor controlling the ecu is broken.
Data i can get about the transistor:
- GA 62 printed on it
- NPN (diagram and transistor test using multimeter confirm this)
- SOT89 form factor
- Using multimeter, diode test on the BROKEN one shown the following : BC value is 0.841 and BE no value
- Using multimeter, diode test on the GOOD one (there are a few around the broken one) : BC and BE value are both 0.841

question:
- can i use other form factors/type transistor safely supposed the specs are within acceptable range / near the broken one spec ?
- If i can use other form factors, can someone help me with the replacement type/model ? A common type that can easily found in a small town electrical store preferred. Where i live there is no store selling sot89 transistor.

Note: I don't have any electronic background but have a strong logical thinking and have no problem playing around electronics and tools so please adjust the explanation to a language a mere mortal like me understand  ...

Thank you in advanced for any help ...

update : got a friend willing to give his fried honda ecu to me. after some multimeter fighting to find replacement transistor, found one with very close specs to my broken one. It's D1779 transistor. Went to a friend's phone service center to borrow his blower and replace it.
Need to test it later in the car. will update if it works.

note: yes i'm cheap bastard that lucky enough to have friends around willing to help for simple thanks.
