Opening a TRW EMS2 E5 ECU

Postby Mark » Mon Dec 11, 2017 7:09 pm

Hi guys,

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, it seemed to fit best here. In a couple of weeks I have a 2016 Volvo truck coming in. TRW EMS2 E5 ECU. I've ordered the probe for it, but I have never touched one of these ECUs before. Has anyone on here got any experience in getting one open? Or any pictures of one being opened? Just to give me a clue.

Thank you.

*bump*

Well I had this in yesterday, and whilst I got the ECU open OK, it's a TRW EMS5 2.3 ECU. However externally looks very similar to EMS2 E5. 2.3 is showing as coming soon in Ktag so the customer is going to come back. The vehicle was a 2016 Volvo FMX 420BHP. To access the ECU, tilt the cab forward - this is done with hydraulics on the (UK anyway, passenger side of the truck) front bumper. There is a little valve on the inside of the foot step, and a large round hole on the corner of the bumper. Inside has a nut for a 21 or 22mm socket. Pull up the front of the cover under the windscreen to access the radiator bottle and dipstick etc. Turn the valve to open it (and turn the other way to lower the cab) and put the socket on the nut with an extension bar and a long ratchet. Turn the nut and the cab will begin to lift. Just pump until it stops.

The ECU is on the cold side of the engine - not the side with the turbo on. 4 bolts hold it, and the ECU connectors are on a plastic fitting held to the ECU with 2 bolts. All bolts are 10mm. If you sit on the wheel or kneel on it, look down theside of the engine. On our truck there was an oil reservoir above it. The connectors could be seen below. It was a bit awkward to get out. We had a fuel pipe and a hydraulic line in the way which we had to disconnect.

Opening the ECU just involved soaking it in a lot of brake cleaner to eat the silicone and using pry bars to gently lift the lid. The lid is thin and bends easily. There's a lot of silicone around it too and it sits quite deep in the ECU case but it does come free OK with the brake cleaner. There's little metal bumps on the ECU housing itself that grip the lid too so the only way to put it back in neatly is to scrape all of the old silicone out with a scalpel and a thin screwdriver, otherwise the lid won't sit down far enough when putting it back together.
