Beginner that wants to learn!

Postby Scootsman » Tue Sep 20, 2016 2:22 am

Hi

Just began reading up on this sort of stuff, been looking through a lot of the forums to try and learn, but many posts are full of terminology and the likes that I don't yet know/understand, so I decided to make a post. I just want some of the basics, I've downloaded VAGsuite, and would love some tips and information, or even just a link to a related post/website that I might've missed or overlooked.

I have a PD100 AXR polo that I plan on toying with, so advice from diesel tuners with PD experience would be amazing.

Thanks

First thing is to work out what ecu your car has. Most probably an edc15.

Do you have a tool to read and write through the obd port?

Do you have a tool to recover your ecu on the bench if you balls something up?

Are you familiar with how a pd diesel works? and how diesel engine in general works?

Half the battle is getting the map on and off the ecu.

Yeah I'm fairly certain it's EDC15, but all the freeware I find online is "EDC15P+", is this compatible for use or...?

And I've bought an MPPS cable for reading/writing, not got a tool to recover though if I brick it, could you recommend something?

I'm somewhat familiar with how they work, I've got a basic level of knowledge but nothing special, I could definitely learn more.

I have some questions, not sure if they're stupid but better to ask and know than to assume, for reading the cars current file/logging, do I just connect my laptop and read? Or do I need to take the care out on a run while connected? It feels like that would be the right way to log it but I'm unsure. Where would be best/most risk free to start off with actually editing the map? And are there any publicized limitations on the sort of limitations a pd100 has? I wasn't able to really find much on this forum on them.
