AFR too rich?

Postby Danielricany » Tue Mar 17, 2015 3:05 pm

Hello. I have an '85 Corvette and I was wondering what is considered too rich to the point that I will get misfires and black smoke?

This question is particularly in reference to a cold engine.

My garage is about 60 degrees, which is where the car is stored. So the engine was about 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

I drove it immediately to test this from a cold start.

The AFR is between 11.0-11.5 during acceleration.

While this didn't cause any misfires or black smoke, the open loop fueling table does get a LOT richer. So I'm wondering, if the engine is colder can it continue to handle rich AFRs?

Thanks!

You need to have an afr of 12--12,5 on WOT.

11-11.5 is way too rich. Best is between 12.5 to 13 if accelerating.

Well, a cold engine needs a richer AFR to work properly.

Maybe there is another fuel input as only the cold start enrichment?
(like additional fuelling for x cycles when pressing the WOT switch)

Unfortunately I do not know a lot of corvettes, but maybe this could be a thing to look at.
Otherwise, the engine would run too rich - lower the fuel map and add some more fuel during the cold start enrichment
